Frequently asked questions

Getting started

What is Chattering?

Chattering is an embeddable AI support and sales agent that you train on your own website, help articles, and documentation. Once installed, it answers visitor questions instantly, with every response backed by a citation so customers can verify the source. When the AI cannot find an answer, it routes the conversation to your shared inbox so a person on your team can step in.

How do I add the widget to my site?

After signing up and creating an agent, go to the Deploy tab in your dashboard. Copy the one-line JavaScript snippet and paste it before the closing </body> tag on every page of your site. The widget appears automatically, styled to your brand colours and greeting message.

How does Chattering learn about my product?

On the Sources tab, enter your website URL and Chattering crawls your public pages, extracting the text content automatically. You can also add plain-text sources and write Q&A pairs directly in the dashboard. The AI uses this knowledge base to generate cited answers — it never invents facts that are not in your sources.

How long does the initial crawl take?

Most sites are fully indexed within a few minutes, though large sites with hundreds of pages may take longer. You can watch progress in the Sources tab and test answers in the Playground before going live. Re-syncing to pick up content updates typically completes in under a minute.

AI answers

Why does the AI cite its sources?

Every AI answer in Chattering includes a citation chip linking back to the exact source page or article it drew from. This lets customers verify the information themselves and builds trust in your support. If the AI cannot find a relevant source, it says so honestly rather than guessing — a behaviour you can rely on from the first day.

What happens when the AI does not know the answer?

When no source in your knowledge base covers the visitor's question, Chattering flags the conversation with a content gap and routes it to your shared inbox. Your team can reply directly, and Chattering can auto-draft a new help article from the thread so the same question gets a great answer next time.

Can I correct an AI answer?

Yes. If the AI misquotes or misinterprets a source, update or replace the source content and re-sync. Changes propagate to all future answers immediately. You can also write explicit Q&A pairs in the dashboard to override the AI's default response for specific questions.

Does the AI answer in languages other than English?

Chattering detects the visitor's language from their messages and replies in kind, even if your source content is written in English only. The AI translates its response while still grounding the answer in your knowledge base, so accuracy is maintained across languages.

Help center & articles

How do I publish a help article?

In your dashboard, open the Help Center section and click New article. Write your article, assign it to a collection, and hit Publish. Published articles appear in your public help center immediately and are also added to the AI's knowledge base so it can cite them in widget answers.

Can the AI draft articles for me?

Yes. When a conversation is closed, Chattering can automatically draft a help article from the transcript. The draft is saved as unpublished so you can review and edit it before it goes live. You can also trigger a draft from any open conversation using the Draft article button in the inbox.

What are collections?

Collections are topic groups that organise your articles — for example Getting Started, Billing, or Integrations. Each collection appears as a card on your help center home page. You can write a custom description for each collection and choose an icon in the dashboard.

Shared inbox

How do I take over a conversation from the AI?

Open the conversation in your inbox and reply in the composer. Sending a reply pauses the AI for that thread so it does not speak over you. The visitor sees a notice that a person has joined the conversation. You can hand back to the AI at any time from the conversation's detail panel.

Does Chattering support email conversations?

Yes. Each agent is assigned a unique inbound email address. Emails sent to that address arrive as conversations in the shared inbox, where the AI answers them the same way it handles chat messages. Your replies leave the inbox as properly threaded emails using the original subject line, so the exchange feels native in the customer's mail client.

Can multiple team members use the inbox?

Yes. All team members on your workspace can read, reply to, and assign conversations in the shared inbox. Assignments are visible to everyone so conversations are never handled twice. Internal notes let you leave context for colleagues without the customer seeing it.

Plans & billing

Is there a free plan?

Yes. Chattering's free plan allows up to 50 AI replies per month with one agent and one source. It is a great way to test the product with real visitors before committing to a paid plan. There is no time limit on the free plan — it stays active for as long as you use it.

What happens when I reach my reply limit?

Once your plan's monthly reply limit is reached, the widget continues to appear for visitors but the AI stops generating new replies until the next billing cycle or until you upgrade. Existing open conversations remain visible in your inbox so you can still respond manually.

How do I upgrade my plan?

Go to Settings › Plan & usage in your dashboard and select the plan that matches your needs. Upgrades take effect immediately and your reply counter resets at the start of each new billing period.

Troubleshooting

The widget is not appearing on my site. What should I check?

First, confirm the snippet is pasted before the closing </body> tag and that the script has loaded without errors in your browser's developer console. If you are using a Content Security Policy, ensure chattering.ai is in your script-src and connect-src directives. Check the Deploy tab to confirm the agent status is active.

The AI gave an incorrect answer. How do I fix it?

Open the conversation in your inbox, identify which source the AI cited, and correct the content on your website or in the dashboard. Re-sync the source and the updated information will be used in all future answers. If the question recurs, add an explicit Q&A pair in the dashboard to pin the correct response.

How do I contact Chattering support?

Use the chat widget on this page or any page of chattering.ai — our AI support agent is available around the clock and routes unanswered questions to a person on our team. You can also email us at support@chattering.ai. We aim to reply to all support emails within one business day.
